Chapter 5: The Daily Duties of Owning a Goat

By this time, you have picked out the breed of goat that you would like to work with and you have met with some breeders to figure out which particular goats you would like to bring home. But once you get the goats home, it is important that you understand some of the daily duties that you will need to keep up with if you want to get all the good milk from the goats, and that the goats are going to stay happy and healthy.

So, when you first get your goats home, make sure to give them a chance to become used to their new surroundings. When they are getting used to these surroundings, you want to make sure that there is as little noise and confusion as possible. Allow the goats to just have some time to roam about the area and explore their new home. If you aren’t looking to get kicked, make sure that you approach the goats from the front. If you feel like it, some goats even enjoy it when they are being sung to.

After you bring home the goats, it is a good idea to get your veterinarian to come out and see them within the first few days. You will want to get them seen for a full exam to make sure that they are healthy and doing well. It is possible that your goats are going to need some vaccinations as well. If you bring home some new goats later on, these need to be quarantined for a bit because this helps to minimize the chances that a new health issue is going to be given to the herd.

It is a good idea to add some new hay to the area each day. This will give the goats something good to eat. Any of the hay that the goats didn’t eat over the past day can be recycled and used as bedding inside of the shelter. In addition, you will need to go through and put out some fresh water for the goats each day. You don’t
